The Tampa community is grieving the death of Ruth Hodges, affectionately referred to as "Mother Hodges," who passed away at the age of 97. Known for her unwavering commitment to education and missionary work, Hodges dedicated more than 40 years to improving the lives of those in Haiti, where she helped build churches, schools, and orphanages. Her local impact was equally profound, as she tutored many children in East Tampa and taught them piano, earning a special place in their hearts. Former Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn described her as a "true servant and icon," reflecting the widespread admiration she garnered throughout her life. Born in 1926 in New York City, Hodges grew up during the Harlem Renaissance and later moved through several states before establishing her home in East Tampa.
Her contributions extended beyond education; she was a beacon of hope and support for many in her community. Her passing marks a significant loss for the area, as she was a symbol of dedication and service. The legacy she leaves behind will continue to inspire future generations.
