The Tampa Warrior Hockey Academy, held at Amalie Arena, marked a significant collaboration between the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Malone Family Foundation, led by former player Ryan Malone. This inaugural event focused on helping veterans and local first responders improve their hockey skills while also offering them valuable wellness lessons. Participants had the opportunity to train alongside Ryan Malone, his father Greg Malone, and other Lightning alumni, fostering a sense of community and support. Ryan Malone emphasized the honor of working with those who have served, reflecting on his family's military history and the importance of recognizing that "freedoms aren't free. " He expressed a desire to see more NHL teams adopt similar programs to support veterans.
The academy not only provided athletic training but also incorporated sessions aimed at enhancing mental, physical, and emotional well-being. This initiative is part of a broader effort to engage and uplift the warrior community, with previous academies held in Pittsburgh and Minnesota. The event was well-received, highlighting the powerful connection between sports and service to the community.
