Tarpon Springs officials consider bringing Freebee shuttle service to city
Tarpon Springs is considering the introduction of the Freebee shuttle service, which has gained popularity in nearby cities such as Dunedin and St. Pete Beach. The proposed service would offer free rides around the city, connecting key locations like downtown, the Sponge Docks, and local beaches. Commissioner Michael Eisner, who was inspired by a presentation at the Florida League of Cities gathering, emphasized that the city could leverage advertising to fund the service while allowing drivers to accept tips to lower operational costs. A trial period is being proposed to evaluate the service's effectiveness, especially during weekends.
Residents have expressed concerns over parking fees at tourist locations, and the Freebee service could serve as a solution by providing an affordable alternative. Vice Mayor John Koulianos echoed support for the idea, believing it could encourage more visitors to explore the downtown area. The initiative aims to promote responsible transportation options for those wanting to enjoy nightlife without the worry of driving home. Overall, the service promises to enhance local transportation and contribute to the economic vitality of Tarpon Springs.
