The Seahorse Restaurant, an iconic establishment in Pass-a-Grille, has garnered local historic designation, a significant step following the extensive damage it incurred from hurricanes Helene and Milton. With a rich history spanning 88 years, the restaurant has served as a vital breakfast and lunch spot for both locals and visitors. At a recent Historic Preservation Board meeting, city planners discussed the owners' commitment to restoring the building using materials that match its original features. This designation is critical for the restaurant to obtain a Certificate of Appropriateness, enabling the necessary repairs to commence. Community members have expressed their sentiments on social media, with many sharing touching tributes about the impact of the restaurant on their lives.
Senior planner Brandon Berry confirmed that while the structure has suffered damage, the original roof appears to be intact. The owners, Carl and Jacqueline Hollenback, are dedicated to restoring the Seahorse to its pre-damage condition, ensuring that it continues to serve as a beloved landmark. Through these efforts, the Seahorse Restaurant aims to reclaim its place at the heart of the Pass-a-Grille community.
