The Pinellas School Board has taken a significant step in honoring former superintendent Mike Grego by naming the new leadership center in Largo as the Dr. Michael A. Grego Leadership Institute. This decision was made unanimously by the board, with members highlighting Grego's decade-long dedication to fostering leadership within the school district. Board member Caprice Edmond noted that the center's creation was a direct outcome of Grego's initiatives, which included increasing high school graduation rates by 20% and addressing achievement gaps among various demographic groups.
Grego expressed his surprise and honor at the naming, attributing the center's success to the collective efforts of the entire team. In addition to Grego's recognition, the board named a new early learning and child care center after Bette Ra Ivey, a retired educator who played a crucial role in nurturing young learners. Board member Eileen Long praised Ivey's commitment to early education, stating, "That’s where it all begins. " These actions not only celebrate individual achievements but also underscore the board's commitment to enhancing educational leadership and early childhood education in the community. The recognition of these leaders reflects the ongoing efforts to uplift and inspire future generations in Pinellas County schools.
