Pinellas County seeks $79M federal grant to replace Dunedin Causeway bridge
Pinellas County is actively seeking a $79 million federal grant to replace the aging Dunedin Causeway bridge, which has been classified as structurally deficient due to its inability to withstand high waves and vessel impacts. The initiative was unanimously endorsed by county commissioners, who recognize the pressing need for a safer and more reliable bridge structure. The proposed design entails a two-lane, midlevel movable bridge that aims to alleviate ongoing mechanical failures that have negatively impacted both vehicular and maritime traffic. Emergency services have been hindered by the bridge's limitations, prompting the need for improvements. Alongside the new bridge, plans include a 5-foot-wide sidewalk and a 15-foot-wide multiuse trail, which will enhance pedestrian and cyclist access.
Construction is slated to commence in 2028, with an anticipated completion date in 2030, and notably, no right-of-way acquisitions will be necessary. County Commissioner Dave Eggers highlighted the challenges of securing funding in the past but expressed hope that this grant aligns well with the county's needs. This project represents a significant investment in local infrastructure, ultimately aiming to enhance safety and efficiency for all users.
