Tampa Italian restaurant Cena has closed
Cena, a cherished Italian restaurant in Tampa's Channel District, has permanently closed after more than a decade of serving upscale cuisine. The closure was primarily prompted by the departure of chef Michael Buttacavoli, who played a crucial role in the restaurant's identity and success. According to co-owner Ken Stoltenberg, this change was the "straw that broke the camel's back," compounded by economic difficulties that have plagued the restaurant industry in recent years. Stoltenberg noted that sales had significantly declined, especially during the summer months, as patrons became more budget-conscious. Additionally, the restaurant's operations were disrupted by hurricanes that affected local customer access.
Cena was first established in 2013 and quickly gained acclaim, making its closure a notable event in the Tampa dining landscape. The impact of this closure extends beyond Cena, as neighboring pizza spot Bread & Butta has also shut down. Stoltenberg's decision to not pursue another business in the area reflects a broader trend of challenges faced by restaurants in the region.
