Dozens arrested in unlicensed contracting sting on Clearwater Beach, officials say
In Clearwater Beach, Florida, a recent sting operation has led to the arrest of 38 individuals involved in unlicensed contracting, coinciding with the community's recovery from Hurricanes Helene and Milton. Over two days, undercover detectives from the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office and Clearwater Police Department uncovered a network of suspects offering unauthorized construction services worth over $100,000. The sheriff noted that all charges are classified as felonies due to the ongoing state of emergency, which underscores the seriousness of the situation. Many of those arrested were not residents of Pinellas County, with at least six individuals facing potential deportation. The investigation revealed that unlicensed contractors were posing as licensed professionals, raising significant safety and legal concerns for residents in need of repairs.
This sting follows closely on the heels of another operation in Madeira Beach, highlighting a troubling trend in unlicensed contracting in the region. Sheriff Bob Gualtieri emphasized the necessity for proper licensing to ensure that contractors possess the requisite skills and training. The crackdown is a critical reminder of the importance of hiring licensed professionals to protect community members during recovery efforts.
