Tampa Bay, FLLocal News

Tampa Mayor Jane Castor will join Sidewalk Stompers on November 6, 2024, to celebrate a rescheduled National Walk/Bike to School Day at Kenneth E. Adum K-8 Magnet School, which opened its doors on August 12, 2024. The event, initially set for October 9, was postponed due to hurricane disruptions, highlighting the resilience of local schools and their dedication to student wellbeing. Emily Hinsdale, President of Sidewalk Stompers, stated that the initiative underscores the importance of providing safe and healthy routes for children, which ultimately benefits the entire community. This collaborative effort involved various local entities, including the City of Tampa’s Mobility Department and the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s crossing guard program, to enhance the safety of walking and biking routes for students.

Hillsborough County has set a new record with 39 schools participating in this year’s event, showcasing a strong commitment to active transportation. Sidewalk Stompers, recognized as an award-winning nonprofit since its inception in 2018, serves over 2,000 students across 18 Hillsborough County public schools. The organization emphasizes the importance of youth engagement in community activities, aiming to foster healthier lifestyles. Local sponsors, like AtkinsRealis, support these initiatives to promote student health and safety while strengthening community ties.
