Tampa Honors Legacy of Dr. Walter L. Smith with Street Renaming
The City of Tampa will honor the legacy of Dr. Walter L. Smith through an honorary street renaming ceremony scheduled for September 17, 2024, at 10:00 a. m. at 905 N.
Albany Ave. Dr. Smith, a distinguished educator and Tampa native, served as the president of Florida A&M University from 1977 to 1985, during which he oversaw considerable advancements in academic programs and facilities. His leadership was instrumental in the construction of the Bragg Memorial Stadium and the Women's Athletic Complex, which significantly enhanced student services. Beyond his role at FAMU, Dr.
Smith also held positions at Hillsborough Community College and the U. S. Office of Education, contributing to educational development on multiple fronts. In 2002, he established the Dr. Walter L.
Smith Library in Tampa, dedicated to promoting education in the community where he grew up. The upcoming ceremony, hosted by City Councilman Luis Viera, will bring together local officials, community members, and Dr. Smith's family to celebrate his profound contributions to education. This event not only honors Dr. Smith’s legacy but also highlights the importance of community engagement in recognizing local leaders.
