Nearly $6 billion in U. S. funding for Ukraine will expire if Congress does not act by the end of September, according to U. S. officials.

The Biden administration has requested that this funding authority be included in a continuing resolution to prevent a government shutdown scheduled for the end of the fiscal year. U. S. officials revealed that approximately $5. 8 billion in presidential drawdown authority (PDA) is set to expire, which enables the Pentagon to quickly send weapons to Ukraine from its stockpiles.

An additional $100 million in PDA will remain available beyond the month. The Defense Department is exploring other options should Congress fail to extend this authority. Furthermore, there is over $4 billion available through the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative that will not expire until September 30, 2025, which supports longer-term contracts for weapons. General CQ Brown highlighted the critical nature of this funding for Ukraine’s winter preparations, particularly in enhancing air defense capabilities. The urgency of the situation underscores the ongoing complexities of U.

S. support for Ukraine amidst a politically charged environment.
