The U. S. Coast Guard has suspended its search for Bert Erwin, a 70-year-old boater who went missing during a planned trip from Marco Island to the Pinellas County coast. Last seen leaving Rose Marina, Erwin's absence prompted a swift response from the Coast Guard after a concerned citizen reported he was overdue to reach Indian Rocks Beach. Search crews scoured the area, ultimately locating Erwin's 37-foot vessel abandoned approximately 28 miles off the coast of Englewood.

Lt. Andrew Grady, the search and rescue mission coordinator, conveyed deep condolences to Erwin's loved ones, emphasizing the emotional weight of suspending such searches. The decision to halt the search came at 10 p. m. on Thursday, reflecting the challenging conditions faced by rescuers.

This tragic incident underscores the importance of safety measures for boaters, particularly in unpredictable maritime environments. As local communities mourn, the Coast Guard continues to advocate for increased awareness around boating safety. The case serves as a reminder of the potential dangers faced by those navigating Florida's waters.
