Therapeutic Courts continue to yield success
Tacoma Municipal Court launched Mental Health and Community Courts in 2023 to address the underlying issues of criminal behavior through treatment rather than traditional sentencing. These therapeutic courts have shown promising results, reducing recidivism by connecting participants with necessary treatment and community resources. Governor Bob Ferguson proclaimed May as National Therapeutic Court Month, emphasizing the program's cost-effectiveness, which shows a $4 return on every tax dollar invested in drug courts. Pierce County's various therapeutic courts, such as Felony Drug Court and Family Recovery Court, exemplify local leadership, influencing similar initiatives across the country. Tacoma's Mental Health Court focuses on individuals with mental health diagnoses, while Community Court addresses issues faced by those charged with misdemeanors, such as food insecurity and housing instability.
A recent City Council meeting featured updates from Tacoma Municipal Court judges, highlighting the support and progress made within these courts. Judge Drew Henke expressed pride in the advancements achieved since the courts' inception. The collaboration among judges, case managers, and community partners plays a crucial role in promoting recovery and independence for participants.
