Hilltop's History Set to Come Alive With New Public Art Project
The Hilltop Public Art Project in Tacoma is poised to transform Martin Luther King Jr. Way into a historical narrative through a series of markers and plaques celebrating the contributions of African American leaders. This initiative, driven by extensive collaboration among the City of Tacoma, local artists, and community organizations, aims to honor the rich history of the Hilltop neighborhood. Mayor Victoria Woodards highlights the project as a vital step in recognizing the enduring legacy of these leaders in fostering justice and equity. The first phase will unveil nine granite markers dedicated to notable figures such as Rev.
Earnest Stonewall Brazill and Alberta Julie Canada, each representing a unique story of community impact. Local artist Whitney Brady is curating the content for 20 bronze plaques and 18 granite markers, ensuring authenticity and depth. The project also features an online component for those seeking more historical context. Funding is provided by the Links to Opportunities capital project, emphasizing community involvement in its development. This artistic endeavor is set to create a lasting legacy, enriching the Hilltop’s cultural landscape for future generations.
