UWT set to grow under master plan

Tacoma, WALocal News

Celebrating its 35th anniversary, the University of Washington-Tacoma (UWT) is set to embark on a major campus expansion, as outlined by Chancellor Sheila Edwards Lange. Presenting to the Tacoma City Council, she discussed a new master plan that envisions a 24/7 campus with increased student housing, dining facilities, and attractive greenspaces. UWT currently serves nearly 5,000 students, but plans are in place to double that number, reflecting the university's growing popularity among local students. Engaging with the community through interviews and workshops has been central to developing this vision, particularly in addressing transportation barriers faced by many students. The university's economic impact has surged from $147 million in 2014 to $359 million today, highlighting its importance in the South Sound region.

As more than half of the student body are first-generation college students, the expansion aims to create a supportive environment for diverse learners. Edwards Lange emphasized that the development of housing and dining options is crucial for fostering a connected campus experience. Ultimately, this expansion will redefine UWT's role in the community and enhance its educational offerings.
