Streets initiative on the ballot this month
Tacoma voters will have the opportunity to decide on the Tacoma Streets Initiative II on April 22, a measure designed to improve the city's main roadways and enhance safety for pedestrians and cyclists. Appearing as Proposition 1 on the ballot, this initiative follows the approval of Streets Initiative I in 2015 and seeks to address the most dangerous roadways in Tacoma. If passed, it will increase utility taxes from 1. 5% to 2% and property taxes from $0. 20 to $0.
25 per $1,000 of assessed value. City officials estimate that this slight increase will amount to about $8 more per month for residents but will enable the city to leverage federal funds at a ratio of $2. 25 for every $1 of local funds. The initiative aims to improve 1,100-1,400 major thoroughfares and enhance accessibility, pedestrian safety, and multimodal connectivity over a 15-year period. Additionally, it aligns with the city’s Vision Zero goal to eliminate traffic fatalities by 2035.
While some residents express concern over increased taxes amid financial uncertainty, city leaders emphasize the long-term benefits of investing in infrastructure to prevent higher costs in the future. Overall, the initiative represents a proactive approach to urban mobility and public safety in Tacoma.
