Pierce County ramps up DUI patrols for St. Patrick's Day

Tacoma, WALocal News

The Pierce County Sheriff's Department is ramping up DUI patrols for St. Patrick's Day in response to a serious crash that occurred recently in the area. Body camera footage from March 15 reveals deputies questioning an intoxicated driver and passenger involved in the incident, which left a 62-year-old man injured. The footage shows a chaotic exchange, with deputies noticing slurred speech and impaired behavior in the suspects. Public Information Officer Carly Cappetto highlighted a troubling trend: DUI incidents involving drugs are now more prevalent than those related to alcohol.

This increase in drug-related DUIs raises concerns about public safety, prompting the department to emphasize the need for designated drivers. The patrols aim to prevent similar accidents and deter impaired driving during the holiday celebrations. Cappetto urges the public to plan safe rides home or face serious legal repercussions. The sheriff's office is determined to maintain road safety as St. Patrick's Day approaches.
