Sports films make their Tacoma debut

Tacoma, WALocal News

The Tacoma-Pierce County Sports Museum is bringing two remarkable sports documentaries to The Grand Cinema on March 29, celebrating the stories of local legends Doris Brown Heritage and Don James. "LAST LAP" offers a poignant look at Heritage, often hailed as "The First Lady of American Distance Running," who shattered barriers in the 1960s and 1970s by setting numerous women's national records. Her groundbreaking achievements include being the first woman to clock a sub-five-minute mile indoors and winning five International Cross Country Championships. The second film, "The Dawgfather: The Legacy of Don James," examines the profound impact of Coach James, whose mentorship emphasized integrity and empowerment beyond the football field. Throughout his coaching career, James led the University of Washington to significant victories, including four Rose Bowls, and his legacy continues to inspire future generations.

Both documentaries not only highlight athletic excellence but also the importance of mentorship and community engagement in sports. This event promises to be a celebration of local history and the enduring influence of these two sports icons. Attendees will be inspired by the remarkable journeys of Heritage and James, reflecting on the lasting legacies they have left in Tacoma and beyond.
