Major housing project comes to University Place

Tacoma, WALocal News

Aviva Crossing, a groundbreaking affordable housing project in University Place, officially commenced on March 19, 2025, bringing hope for many families in the region. Spearheaded by the Tacoma Housing Authority and Mercy Housing Northwest, the development will feature 129 energy-efficient homes—half of which will be two- and three-bedroom units. This initiative is vital for families facing housing instability, ensuring that they only pay 30 percent of their income in rent through Housing Choice Vouchers. The project also emphasizes community support, with Tacoma Public Schools ensuring educational assistance for children experiencing homelessness. Aviva Crossing will include communal green spaces, retail areas, and access to public transit, fostering a sense of community.

Mercy Housing Northwest aims to expand its services, including the Mercy Scholars program for academic support. The redevelopment of the James Center North shopping center will introduce over 500 new homes in a high-opportunity neighborhood. This ambitious project underscores a commitment to enhancing housing stability and community engagement in Pierce County.
