Comment Period on Proposed Surface Mining Project Extended to March 3

Tacoma, WALocal News

The City of Tacoma has decided to extend the public comment period for a proposed sand and gravel mining project on Marine View Drive until March 3, 2017, following a public meeting that elicited substantial community feedback. Many residents voiced concerns about the potential noise impacts associated with the project, prompting Planning Manager Jana Magoon to assure that all comments will be considered during the permit review. To address these concerns, a noise study has been requested from the project applicant, with results expected by February 16, 2017. If the study is delayed, the City will prolong the comment period to ensure residents have adequate time to review the findings. Deputy Mayor Robert Thoms highlighted the study's significance, stating that it aligns with neighborhood priorities for protecting quality of life.

After reviewing the gathered information, the City may impose additional conditions or restrictions beyond existing regulations. A decision regarding the project's future is expected by the end of April 2017. For community members wishing to submit comments or seek further information, contact details and resources have been provided.
