Rally for Peace and Welcoming at Lincoln High
The Tacoma Refugee Choir is set to host its Rally for Peace and Welcoming on January 25 at Lincoln High School, inviting individuals from all backgrounds to support asylum seekers and immigrants. This rally is framed as a collective effort to promote empathy, celebrate diversity, and break down barriers, featuring a variety of performances, including a live mural painting and diverse dance groups. Executive Director J. Woody Lotts highlights the choir's mission to demonstrate that Tacoma is a welcoming community, offering attendees actionable steps to support marginalized groups. The event is non-partisan and aims to reaffirm the humanity of all individuals, resonating with the foundational ideals of America.
Following the departure of founder Erin Guinup, Lotts and Assistant Artistic Director Morales are eager to carry forward the choir's impactful work. Guinup expressed her emotional transition, acknowledging the love and community bonds built through the choir. She plans to stay in Tacoma, focusing on new projects that foster belonging. The rally underscores the importance of community engagement in promoting peace and inclusivity during uncertain times.
