On December 29, 2024, a horse named Birdie tragically lost her life after being struck by a car on the Key Peninsula, Washington. The Key Peninsula Fire Department reported that Birdie was spooked and escaped from her paddock, leading to the accident near state Route 302. Thankfully, the driver of the vehicle was unharmed, but Birdie succumbed to her injuries shortly after. Birdie's owner, Amanda Dominguez, described her as a sweet and beloved companion, particularly cherished by her 12-year-old daughter. Birdie had replaced another horse that had passed away earlier in the year, deepening the family's bond with her.

In response to the tragedy, the community has come together to support the family, offering flowers, cards, and shared condolences. Dominguez expressed gratitude for the kindness shown by locals who helped manage traffic and provided comfort during this difficult time.
