Puyallup Animal Shelter Closes for Emergency Maintenance Due to Mold Discovery
Metro Animal Services has temporarily closed its facility due to the discovery of possible mold under the office floor, identified on December 11. In a swift response, all 64 animals in the shelter's care were relocated to foster families and partner shelters to ensure their safety. The city of Puyallup, which owns the building, is coordinating with industrial hygienists to evaluate the facility and outline necessary repairs for reoccupation. While the shelter is closed, Metro Animal Services remains active in responding to calls about animals needing assistance. The agency advises the public to report stray animals on social media, emphasizing that these animals often return home more quickly if left alone.
Adoption and surrender services have been put on hold during this emergency maintenance period. Additionally, those looking to donate are encouraged to support other local shelters until Metro can resume regular operations. With a budget of approximately $1. 2 million, Metro Animal Services has successfully adopted out 403 animals in 2023 alone, showcasing its commitment to animal welfare despite current challenges.
