The St. Pete Pickle Ball Association has joined forces with the Parc Center for Disabilities to introduce the sport of pickleball to individuals with disabilities, creating an enriching and inclusive environment. Coaches, including Dr. Ed. Carlson and Bill Gerczak, dedicate their time twice a week to teach the sport, which has led to remarkable improvements in the participants’ skills.
Initially chaotic, the sessions have evolved into organized practices where players are progressively learning the game. According to Brian Rothey, the Assistant Vice-President of Adult Community Programs, the joy experienced by the participants as they develop new skills is truly heartwarming. The coaches have observed that skills learned on the court translate to increased confidence and teamwork in other areas of life. The ultimate goal of this partnership is to prepare the participants for competition in the Special Olympics, with players expressing their excitement and readiness to compete. Julio Rivera and Holly Digiacomo, two enthusiastic players, emphasized the importance of trying new things and the joy they find in the sport.
This collaboration not only expands the horizons of individuals with disabilities but also fosters community engagement and personal growth.
