Brown Administration Proposes Public Health and Safety Ordinances
Spokane Mayor Lisa Brown has announced two significant ordinances aimed at enhancing public health and safety in the downtown area. The first ordinance proposes the re-establishment of an Alcohol Impact Area (AIA) to address the increase in alcohol-related issues, including illegal activities and littering from single-serve alcohol containers. Despite an overall decrease in crime, alcohol-related incidents have surged by 64% over the last three years, highlighting the urgent need for these measures. The second ordinance will regulate the sale of smoking paraphernalia, requiring vendors to provide naloxone for free to combat the rising use of illicit substances, particularly fentanyl. Mayor Brown stated that these initiatives are crucial for tackling the underlying causes of crime and promoting community wellness.
To further support these efforts, the Spokane Fire Department will offer naloxone training to local businesses. Community leaders have expressed their support for these measures, recognizing their potential to foster safer neighborhoods. These ordinances reflect a proactive approach to public health in Spokane, aiming to reduce disparities and enhance overall community well-being.
