Spokane Valley City Council poised to enact new punishments related to homelessness
The Spokane Valley City Council is set to vote on a new ordinance introducing stricter penalties for homelessness-related activities in public parks. Under the proposed law, being in a park after operating hours will be classified as a misdemeanor, while the definition of camping will be broadened to encompass sleeping in public spaces without the need for camping gear. This legislative move follows a recent Supreme Court ruling that has allowed cities to enforce stricter camping bans, previously limited by considerations of shelter availability. City Attorney Kelly Konkright emphasized that the ordinance is not only aimed at the homeless population but applies to anyone found sleeping in parks after hours. The proposed changes come amid increasing discussions on effectively managing homelessness within local communities.
Councilman Al Merkel expressed support for the ordinance but urged for additional measures to address homelessness comprehensively. City Manager John Hohman stressed the importance of balancing enforcement with support services for the homeless. The council is expected to finalize the ordinance during its regular meeting on Tuesday, potentially reshaping the local landscape for homeless individuals.
