Food bank takes hit, pleads for communitys help
The Snohomish food bank is grappling with significant challenges following a $4. 7 million cut in USDA commodities by the state Department of Agriculture. This reduction affects crucial food supplies, including items like milk, canned chicken, and dried fruits, which usually constitute 30% to 40% of the food distributed to local pantries. Food bank director Megan Kemmett expressed concern over the uncertain impact of these cuts, especially as the organization has recently seen an influx of 72 new families seeking assistance in March. The timing of this federal cutback exacerbates the issue of food insecurity in the community.
To combat this growing crisis, the food bank is actively soliciting community support and donations. Located at 1330 Ferguson Park Road, the food bank welcomes contributions during designated hours. Individuals can also donate electronically through their website. This situation highlights the critical role of local food banks in maintaining food security and the urgent need for community engagement.
