Monroe arts group seeks volunteers to prepare, refurbish chairs Snohomish County Tribune
The Monroe Arts Council is mobilizing volunteers to refurbish the 700-plus chairs at the historic Wagner Performing Arts Center, which has served the community since 1939. Due to financial limitations, replacing the chairs is not feasible, leading to a grassroots restoration project that encourages community involvement. Public work parties are scheduled for March 22 and April 19, welcoming individuals to lend a hand in revitalizing this cherished venue. In collaboration with Monroe Upholstery, the council invested $1,700 in fabric to recover the most worn seat cushions, with volunteers playing a crucial role in the restoration process. To date, 145 seats have been refurbished, thanks to fundraising efforts from local groups like The Naatya Pushp Academy of Bharatanatyam, which raised $7,400 for additional fabric.
The project has not only improved the auditorium's appearance but has also united various community organizations and individuals in a shared goal. With up to 25 seats completed in a single workday, this initiative exemplifies the power of community spirit in preserving local heritage. The ongoing efforts highlight the importance of volunteerism and collaboration for maintaining cultural landmarks.
