Letter to the Editor The RFA experiment adds nothing but risk

Shoreline, WALocal News

David Maehren's letter to the editor presents a strong rebuttal to Chief Cowan's defense of the Regional Fire Authority (RFA), asserting that it compromises local control by shifting authority to a regional board. He emphasizes that the RFA's levy increase—from $. 070 to $1. 00 per $1,000 of assessed value—will burden local taxpayers while not providing any tangible benefits. Maehren argues that there are no real cost savings associated with the RFA, as existing carryover funds will remain under local control, and the costs of governance will likely increase.

He also critiques the lack of service improvements, noting that the RFA does not add any new fire stations, personnel, or equipment. The effectiveness of the current Interlocal Agreement (ILA) is highlighted, showcasing its success in delivering efficiency and high service levels without the proposed RFA changes. Maehren warns that the tax cut being proposed is merely a tactic to sway public opinion and not a genuine financial relief. He concludes that the potential risks posed by the RFA do not justify its establishment, as the current system is functioning well. Overall, the letter serves as a call to maintain local governance and assess the true implications of the RFA.
