Mexican national who acted as transporter for smuggling conspiracy sentenced to 15 months in prison
Jesus Ortiz-Plata, a 46-year-old transporter for a human smuggling conspiracy, was sentenced to 15 months in federal prison in Seattle for his role in endangering lives by transporting non-citizens across the northern U. S. border. Arrested on May 23, 2024, Ortiz-Plata was found with three non-citizens who had entered the U. S.
from Canada via freight train cars. U. S. District Judge James L. Robart described the smuggling operation as "callous," reflecting the serious risks involved in such activities.
U. S. Attorney Tessa M. Gorman highlighted the dangerous nature of transnational smuggling groups, which charge exorbitant fees and exploit vulnerable individuals. Despite not leading the smuggling ring, Ortiz-Plata's involvement aided the success of the operation, and he acknowledged that he was aware of the illegal methods used by those he transported.
Following his prison term, he faces the likelihood of deportation back to Mexico. The case underscores the ongoing efforts by law enforcement, including Homeland Security Investigations and U. S. Border Patrol, to combat human smuggling along the northern border. Continued vigilance against such dangerous smuggling tactics remains a priority for authorities.
