Shoreline School District to hold community meetings about budget shortfall

Shoreline, WALocal News

The Shoreline School District is confronting a significant budget shortfall as a result of declining student enrollment, which has dropped by more than 400 students since the peak in the 2019-20 school year. The decline is largely attributed to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and broader economic challenges, including limited housing affordability. As state funding is allocated based on enrollment figures, this drop has serious implications for the district's finances. Anticipating continued enrollment declines due to lower birth rates in King County, the district is taking proactive measures to address its budget challenges. A series of community meetings has been organized to engage residents, staff, families, and students in discussions about the district's financial situation.

The first session was held on January 31, 2023, and three additional meetings are scheduled for February. Through these sessions, the district aims to raise awareness and encourage community involvement in budget planning. This initiative reflects the district’s commitment to transparency and collaboration in navigating financial constraints.
