Starbucks imposes new limits on what baristas can wear under their green aprons
Starbucks is set to introduce a new dress code for its baristas beginning May 12, which will require employees to wear solid black shirts and khaki, black, or blue denim bottoms. The company believes that this change will make its green aprons more distinctive and enhance the overall customer experience. Despite this intention, the move has drawn criticism from Starbucks Workers United, a labor group that has organized workers at over 550 locations. They argue that the company should prioritize operational improvements, such as better staffing and guaranteed hours, rather than focusing on a limiting dress code. Jasmine Leli, a barista and a union bargaining delegate, has voiced her discontent, stating that Starbucks is neglecting critical issues that affect daily operations.
The dress code change comes nearly a decade after the company previously loosened its attire policy to allow more employee self-expression. Critics are also concerned about the financial implications, as workers may need to purchase new clothing while already facing wage challenges. The new guidelines still permit one facial piercing, maintaining some level of personal expression amidst the stricter dress code.
