Seattle City Council preparing proposal for larger 4.5M a year Democracy Voucher levy to go to voters this summer
The Seattle City Council's Governance, Accountability, and Economic Development Committee is poised to vote on a proposal to renew the Democracy Voucher program, with an increase in funding to $4. 5 million annually. This initiative aims to diminish the influence of large campaign donors, promoting a more equitable political landscape. The proposal, which includes a $45 million property tax over ten years, is expected to cost the median Seattle homeowner about $12. 20 each year.
City officials emphasize that the increase is essential to address inflationary pressures and rising administrative costs. While some vouchers have gone unused, the program has reportedly increased representational equality among diverse demographics. For example, in 2023, over 118,000 vouchers were processed, distributing more than $2. 4 million to qualifying candidates. If the council passes the renewal, a workgroup will be established in 2026 to recommend further enhancements to better reach underrepresented communities.
The measure is set to be placed on the August primary ballot for voter approval.
