Construction begins on 7-story development that will rise above Chop Suey, Diesel, and the Madison Pub
Construction on the Tanager Apartments, a seven-story mixed-use development in Seattle's Capitol Hill area, has officially begun, according to reports from the Puget Sound Business Journal. This project, situated between Chop Suey and two popular queer bars, will feature 138 residential units along with new commercial spaces on both Madison and Union streets. Underground parking for approximately 50 vehicles is also included in the design. Board and Vellum, a local firm, has crafted a unique design that emphasizes a courtyard filled with greenery, creating a serene environment in a bustling urban setting. Originally, the development plans focused on a smaller footprint, but an expanded property deal allowed for a larger vision.
The Tanager Apartments are expected to offer market-rate housing, complemented by a selection of affordable units under the city’s Multi-Family Tax Exemption program. This project is part of a broader trend of midrise developments in the area, including the affordable Heartwood building and the adaptive reuse of the landmark Knights of Columbus Building. With a projected opening in summer 2026, this development is poised to significantly impact the neighborhood.
