13-year-old released from custody after shooting at Lakeland Elementary School

Seattle, WALocal News

A shooting incident at Lakeland Elementary School in King County, Washington, has raised serious concerns among parents and the community. A 13-year-old boy was arrested for allegedly shooting a fellow student during recess, with the incident occurring around 2:45 p. m. The victim was taken to Harborview Medical Center for treatment, while the suspect was booked into juvenile detention and later released to his family. Parents, including Esperanza Torres, questioned why the school was not put on lockdown, particularly as students were allowed to leave campus shortly after the event.

In response, Federal Way Public Schools stated they acted according to law enforcement directives, which indicated there was no ongoing threat to students. They maintained that students and staff did not witness or hear anything that warranted a lockdown. The King County Sheriff's Office confirmed that they were handling an unrelated call when they were approached by the victim. The King County Prosecuting Attorney's Office is anticipated to make a decision regarding charges in the near future.
