Relocated sobering center set to open in Seattle's SODO neighborhood by end of year
King County's sobering center is moving to a new location at 1950 1st Ave S in Seattle's SODO neighborhood, with preparations underway for an opening by the end of the year. Managed by Pioneer Human Services, the center is designed to provide a safe environment for individuals who are homeless and under the influence of substances. King County Executive Shannon Braddock highlighted the facility's role in connecting people to critical treatment options and support services. While local business leaders have expressed concerns about the center's potential impact on the neighborhood, they are increasingly optimistic following discussions with county officials. The center will accommodate up to 40 individuals at a time, offering them shelter and medical observation during their stay.
Once stabilized, clients will receive referrals for drug treatment and housing assistance, addressing their immediate needs. Previously, the sobering center operated out of the Yesler Building, assisting over 1,000 individuals last year. The new location, despite its troubled past, is seen as a vital step in improving community safety and support for those facing substance use challenges.
