No injuries but downed wires and smashed cars as wind brings down big elm at 18th and Howell
Last Sunday, Seattle faced strong winds nearing 40 MPH, resulting in the dramatic fall of a large American Elm tree at 18th and Howell. The tree's collapse brought down utility lines and caused damage to several parked cars, leading to a prompt response from emergency services. Thankfully, no injuries were reported, although residents of the nearby Union Gospel Mission were instructed to remain indoors for safety. The fallen tree had a trunk diameter of 31 inches, making it a significant loss for the neighborhood. While chainsaws were employed to clear the street, the area retains several other notable elms, including a recognized Heritage Tree at 11th and John.
Additionally, the local cherry trees on 21st Ave E emerged relatively unscathed from the storm. As the community recovers, a calmer week with warmer temperatures is anticipated, reaching the mid-60s. This incident serves as a reminder of the vulnerability of urban trees during severe weather events.
