Five years after pandemic suspension, Metro restarting fare enforcement
King County Metro will reinstate fare enforcement starting March 31, 2025, after a five-year suspension due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Initially, riders will receive friendly, verbal reminders for unpaid fares, transitioning to written warnings by May 31. This phased approach allows riders time to adjust while emphasizing compliance. The return of fare enforcement is significant, as fares accounted for approximately $73 million in revenue in 2024, crucial for Metro's operating budget exceeding $2 billion. In addition to financial implications, Metro is responding to public safety concerns, establishing a Transit Safety and Security Task Force to address issues following incidents like the tragic murder of transit operator Shawn Yim.
The enforcement strategy also includes provisions for low-income and vulnerable riders, such as reduced fare options and free rides for youth. Metro's commitment to equitable access reflects a broader understanding of the challenges facing its community. Overall, this initiative aims to balance revenue generation, safety, and social equity within the transit system.
