Voices Off Lounge, a hub for the Deaf community, now growing on Capitol Hill
The recently inaugurated Voices Off Lounge in Capitol Hill, Seattle, serves as a vital resource for the Deaf community, offering a safe and inclusive environment for socializing and learning American Sign Language (ASL). Founded by Kellie Gillespie, the CEO of Visually Speaking, the lounge will feature six-week ASL courses led by Deaf instructors, addressing a significant gap in practice opportunities for students. Gillespie's vision was born from years of conversations with ASL learners who sought spaces to enhance their skills and connect with others. The lounge is set to host two grand-opening celebrations, with one event specifically designed for the Deaf community and the other welcoming all residents. This initiative builds on a previous successful pop-up experience that underscored the demand for a permanent community hub.
Voices Off Lounge not only aims to facilitate language learning but also aspires to become a center for community-building and support. With its commitment to inclusivity, the lounge reflects a broader movement towards enhancing accessibility and representation in urban spaces. The establishment of this venue marks a significant step towards addressing the social needs of marginalized communities in Seattle.
