Voices Off Lounge, a hub for the Deaf community, now growing on Capitol Hill
The Voices Off Lounge, located in Capitol Hill, Seattle, is poised to become a vital resource for the Deaf community by offering a welcoming space for socializing and learning American Sign Language (ASL). Founded by Kellie Gillespie, CEO of Visually Speaking, this lounge aims to address the pressing need for social spaces for Deaf individuals and ASL learners. The venue will provide six-week ASL courses taught by qualified Deaf instructors, responding to requests from students seeking practice opportunities. Historically, Capitol Hill was a bustling hub for the Deaf community, but the closure of the Interpreter Training Program at Seattle Central College in 2011 left a significant gap. The grand opening celebrations on January 31 and February 1, 2025, will mark a new chapter for the community, emphasizing inclusivity and engagement.
Gillespie's vision is to create a space that fosters connection and accessibility, inviting participation from both Deaf and hearing individuals. This initiative not only revitalizes a previously rich cultural landscape but also embodies a commitment to building a supportive and engaged community. The Voices Off Lounge represents an important step toward empowering individuals and enhancing the visibility of Deaf culture in Seattle.
