5 men indicted for 'staggering' drug trafficking ring connected to Seattle encampments

Seattle, WALocal News

Federal prosecutors have unveiled the indictment of five men involved in a drug trafficking organization known as "the Jungle," accused of orchestrating a significant narcotics trade in Seattle's Chinatown-International District. The investigation, initiated in fall 2023, exposed how this group exploited the vulnerabilities of individuals experiencing homelessness, often resorting to violence and threats to maintain control. U. S. Attorney Tessa Gorman described the community’s suffering, asserting that a small number of individuals were causing extensive harm.

The federal charges against the five men include conspiracy to distribute controlled substances, with potential sentences of up to ten years in prison. In addition to the drug charges, some defendants face accusations of unlawful firearm possession, with law enforcement seizing 17 firearms and 23 kilos of suspected fentanyl powder. The potency of the seized drugs could have resulted in over 1. 7 million potentially lethal doses entering the community. Mayor Bruce Harrell announced a commitment to address the drug crisis, stating that the city must prioritize safety and provide pathways for treatment.

Recent actions by law enforcement, including the deployment of SWAT teams, underscore the city's focus on combating drug trafficking in vulnerable neighborhoods.
