New homeless service center planned for vacant 3rd Avenue building in downtown Seattle

Seattle, WALocal News

The Stability Through Access and Resources (STAR) Center is set to open in early 2025 at a vacant building on 3rd Avenue in downtown Seattle, focusing on the needs of homeless individuals dealing with mental health and substance abuse challenges. Operated by the Downtown Emergency Service Center (DESC), the facility will accommodate up to 85 people, providing a structured pathway from homelessness to care and potential recovery. This new center will replace the DESC's Navigation Center, which is closing due to public safety concerns. The STAR Center will prioritize safety with 24/7 monitoring and staffing, including security measures like cameras and perimeter patrols. Mayor Bruce Harrell has emphasized the city's commitment to addressing the fentanyl crisis affecting the downtown area.

The STAR Center is part of a broader strategy to enhance public safety and provide vital resources for Seattle's vulnerable populations. Additional DESC facilities, including a behavioral health clinic and an Opioid Recovery and Care Access center, are planned for the same corridor, aiming to establish a comprehensive healthcare and resource hub for those in need.
