The Seattle City Council has officially approved a pilot program that will allow the city to partner with the South Correctional Entity (SCORE) to enhance jail services. Sponsored by Councilmember Bob Kettle, the legislation permits the housing of 20 additional misdemeanor detainees, addressing the significant reduction in available jail spots at the King County Jail. This reduction has been attributed to staffing shortages, which limited the types of misdemeanor offenses that can lead to booking. Councilmember Kettle stressed the need for law enforcement to protect neighborhoods while also leading with compassion. Councilmember Rob Saka added that a comprehensive strategy is essential for public safety, integrating enforcement with diversion and treatment options.
Council President Sara Nelson emphasized the urgency of creating jail capacity as part of a broader public safety strategy. The Mayor's Office will work on defining policies for which crimes will qualify for detention at SCORE. This pilot program represents a step towards improving public safety in Seattle amidst ongoing challenges.
