Green Codes City of Scottsdale
The Scottsdale City Council has adopted the 2021 suite of building codes, including the International Green Construction Code (IgCC), with an effective date of July 1, 2023. This comprehensive approach aims to facilitate the green designation of commercial and multi-family projects by addressing crucial environmental concerns. Key measures include reducing the heat island effect, increasing electric vehicle charging capacity, and promoting biodiversity through certified lumber. Many of these initiatives are already embedded in Scottsdale's existing regulations, such as the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) and various planning ordinances. Anthony Floyd, the Green Building Program Manager, highlights that the IgCC integrates green building practices directly into the permit process.
This not only streamlines compliance but also boosts resource savings and enhances the environmental impact of developments. Scottsdale's commitment to green building dates back to 1998, with over 1,450 green home permits issued since then. The city has also been proactive in commercial green building initiatives, issuing over 60 permits to date, demonstrating its leadership in sustainable construction.
