San Jose still searching for new flea market site - San José Spotlight
San Jose officials are facing challenges in finding a new location for the Berryessa Flea Market, which is at risk of displacement due to new development plans. Two sites have been considered: a former Sears building near Eastridge Mall and a former landfill in South San Jose, but both locations present significant challenges that could impede the relocation process. City officials have already begun exploring these alternatives without waiting for the completion of a relocation study. Roberto Gonzalez, president of the Berryessa Flea Market Vendors Association, emphasized the need for continued collaboration with city leaders to ensure the market’s future. The current site is slated for a major transit-oriented development, which will include 3,500 homes and various commercial spaces.
The relocation study found that the Berryessa Flea Market attracts customers from a larger area than similar markets, contributing an estimated operating income of $5. 7 million. Gonzalez noted that vendors will receive a one-year notice prior to any eviction, signaling that time is of the essence in finding a new site. The Bumb family, landowners of the existing market site, have expressed support for the search for a new location, urging city officials to expedite the process.
