City Advances 2040 Zero Net Energy Goal with $30 Million Solar Initiative
San Antonio is making significant strides towards its 2040 zero net energy goal through a $30 million solar initiative, which is the largest on-site solar program by a local Texas government. The initiative includes the installation of 42 solar projects, with six already commissioned, featuring rooftop solar photovoltaic systems and solar canopies at various City-owned facilities. Mayor Ron Nirenberg stated that these projects will collectively offset an estimated 11 percent of the City’s electricity consumption, marking a substantial boost in sustainability efforts. A community event held on September 5 included a commissioning ceremony for the Southwest Service Center's solar canopy, which provides 200 covered parking spaces and is designed to offset approximately 70 percent of the facility's annual electricity consumption. Douglas Melnick, the Chief Sustainability Officer, emphasized that the project exemplifies San Antonio's commitment to climate action and financial savings.
Big Sun Solar, a local commercial solar company, is developing the program in collaboration with the City. The initiative is part of a broader Climate Action and Adaptation Plan aimed at achieving net zero energy by 2040. For more information, residents can visit the Office of Sustainability’s website.
