City to Mark 9/11 Anniversary with Mayoral Remarks at Memorial Ceremony
The City of Rockville will host a memorial ceremony on September 11 to commemorate the 23rd anniversary of the September 11 attacks and to honor the 11 local residents who lost their lives that day. The ceremony will begin at 9 a. m. at Courthouse Square Park, a dedicated memorial site at the corner of East Jefferson Street and Maryland Avenue. Mayor Monique Ashton is scheduled to give remarks, emphasizing the importance of remembering those who were lost.
The memorial, designed by artists Gene and Susan Flores, features a grassy area surrounded by 11 benches, each inscribed with a personal message related to the character of the victims. Additionally, a plaque bearing the names of the deceased is part of the memorial, designed to be illuminated by the morning sun on the anniversary. This free event aims to bring the community together in remembrance and reflection. The City encourages all residents to attend and participate in this significant occasion. Such ceremonies play a crucial role in maintaining collective memory and honoring the sacrifices made by individuals in times of tragedy.
