City’s Climate Action Projects Get a Boost from Grants
Rockville's commitment to sustainability is strengthened by new grants exceeding $900,000, aimed at advancing the city's Climate Action Plan. The Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments has allocated $371,000 for the installation of bikeshare stations and $324,000 for electric vehicle charging stations in multiple city locations. These efforts will improve access to sustainable transportation for residents, particularly those lacking home charging options. Additionally, a $134,000 grant from the U. S.
Department of Energy will fund solar panel installations on the Lincoln Park Community Center and promote the use of electric landscaping equipment. The Maryland Energy Administration has awarded Rockville several grants to convert streetlights to LED and install EV charging ports for city vehicles. These initiatives reflect Rockville's proactive approach to addressing climate change and promoting clean energy solutions. The funding is a direct result of the $1 trillion federal infrastructure legislation passed in 2021. This comprehensive strategy aims to reduce the city's carbon footprint and enhance the quality of life for its residents.
