RCPD Collects 270 Firearms During Gun Buyback
The Rockville City Police Department (RCPD) held its third annual gun buyback event on August 17, 2024, at Redgate Park, where it successfully collected 270 firearms. Participants were offered VISA gift cards as incentives, with $100 for handguns, rifles, and shotguns, and $200 for assault weapons and ghost guns. The event attracted considerable community engagement, as many attendees arrived over an hour before the official start time of 9:00 a. m. Among the notable figures present were various sworn and professional staff from the RCPD, Rockville City council members, and Deputy State’s Attorney Peter Feeney.
Chief Victor Brito highlighted the event's success, attributing it to the strong partnerships with the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office and the Rockville City government. The firearms collected will undergo an inventory process before being sent for destruction within the next 48 hours. The event reflects ongoing efforts to address gun violence and promote community safety. Overall, the buyback was well-received, demonstrating a proactive approach to firearm management in the community.
