City to Mark 9/11 Anniversary with Mayoral Remarks at Memorial Ceremony
The City of Rockville will mark the 23rd anniversary of the September 11 attacks with a solemn ceremony on September 11 at Courthouse Square Park, starting at 9 a. m. The event is open to the public and will feature a presentation of colors and remarks from Mayor Monique Ashton. This memorial honors the lives of 11 Montgomery County residents who perished during the attacks, ensuring their memories are preserved within the community. Designed by artists Gene and Susan Flores, the memorial includes a grassy area encircled by 11 benches, each dedicated to a victim with inscriptions celebrating their unique character.
A plaque with the victims' names is also part of the memorial, which was thoughtfully designed to align with the morning sun to illuminate each name on this significant day. The ceremony not only serves as a tribute to those lost but also reinforces the resilience and unity of the Rockville community. As the anniversary approaches, residents are encouraged to participate in this meaningful event to reflect on the past and honor the lives affected. This observance highlights the city’s commitment to remembering its residents and fostering a spirit of remembrance and community solidarity.
